With reference to Mr. Bourne's despatch to you No. 4 of the 20th August last, on the subject of the deportation of Florence Garrett, and his telegram to you of the 4th of August therein referred on the subject of the payment of the expenses of her deportation, I enclose copy of a despatch from the Foreign Office inquiring whether Miss Garrett is a native of the United Kingdom or a Colonial British subject, and from what funds the cost of her maintenance at Hong Kong will be defrayed.
Mr. Bourne in reporting the confirmation of the Order of deportation to His Majesty's Secretary of State informed his Lordship that he had instructed you to arrange if possible that the costs of deportation should be borne from a private source, and I shall
